Estonian manors
Previous part (previous style)

Little is known about the influence of Renaissance style, which originated from the Mediterranean countries and dominated in Estonia from the first half of the 16th century until the first half of the 17th century. The wide windows of the Purtse fortress-manor (built in the 1530s) is one example of the Early Renaissance style.

Kiltsi fortress (near Haapsalu) which was rebuilt as a palace with three beautiful curved portals at the beginning of the 17th century, can be regarded as the only example of High renaissance in Estonia. The influence of the Renaissance on Estonian manorial architecture was presumably a bit stronger than that, but very little of the 16th and 17th centuries has been preserved to the date (largely due to the destructions of the Great Northern War).
